RELIEF WORK FOR FLOOD VICTIMS IN KARNATAKA AND ANDHRA PRADESH

In the last about one week hundreds of Indians have been drowned and millions of us lost our homes to flooding. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are being lashed by torrential rains and the worst flooding in 100 years – what’s more, scientists say we will see more of this kind of thing as global warming speeds up.

AMURT AP, has reached 8 villages, from 4th of oct till date. The worst than the previous mentioned were the villages we visited yesterday. Vaishnava palli and Gumadam of (Nandi Kotkur Mandal, Kurnool dist), approx 120 kilometers interior from Kurnool Hyderabad highway (NH 7). These villages seemed to be a heap of ruins. Not a single roof top is left safe. Not a single house is untouched; the municipal water tank which stands about 35 feet above the ground, as said by the residents was totally submerged for 4 days in water. In real sense the flood water was flowing above 30 feet in these areas.

As said by some of the village elders there “We have lived all our lives in shackles and when at last we got a pakka house built under ‘Indiramma Houses’ (a govt. promoted construction of houses for poor program), we have not lived even for one year under these roofs and today we are not even left with the shackles.”

The village elders who are over 80 years they have never seen such a flood. AMURT  team has distributed two utensil, lids for the utensils, a spoon, a saree, a dhoti, a blanket, 5 KG Rice, 250 gram tamarind, 1KG chana  dal, a salt packet, 250 gm Chilli powder and 100 gm turmeric powder, jeera & rai, 1 kg cooking oil, one bath soap, one washing soap and one tooth paste per family.

The happiness that we found over their faces was beyond imagination. It gave great satisfaction for every team member to serve such worst affected. We wish to reach out to the most remote areas possible and serve people where little help is going even after 8 days after flood.
